Alan Levine, MD
The MSTS society is saddened by the loss of Dr. Levine.  He was an outstanding member of the MSTS for many years and has influenced the lives of many members.  We will certainly miss him.

Upcoming Annual Meeting - Philadelphia
Please plan to attend the annual meeting this year which will be held in Philadelphia at the Four Seasons Hotel, September 30 to October 2. The local host for the meeting is Richard Lackman, MD.  There will be a CPT Coding Session at the meeting on Thursday, September 30 from 10am to 3pm. The fee for this workshop will be $150 per person.  The 'Perspectives on 2010 Coding Changes' Workshop is scheduled for
3:30 pm to 5:00 pm and it is free for members and $50 for non members.   Please register online at www.msts.org .  You can also reserve your room at the Four Seasons Hotel on the MSTS website as well.  The Call for Abstracts deadline has been extended to midnight on May 15, 2010.  If you have any questions regarding the meeting, please contact Jennifer Abner at jenabner@gmail.com .

Research Committee Update
Request for MSTS Research Proposals

The executive committee has approved awarding monies for research.  Up to $30,000 (is it 30 or 50K?) has been allocated by the MSTS for musculoskeletal research projects thought to be more translational or clinical as opposed to basic science projects.  Proposals are reviewed by the research committee of the MSTS with recommendations forwarded to the executive committee who has final authority to grant funds.  Deadline for submission is July 31, 2010.  See attached pages for more information provided by Dr. Rick Terek.

Potential research projects or clinical trials for the MSTS have included discussion on the following:

  1. Randomized trial of GCT treatment incorporating bisphosphonates or Denusomab,
  2. PVNS treatment using arthroscopy, open surgery and or radiation
  3. Treatment of solitary metastases with various fixation or more aggressive treatment strategies
  4. Development of new staging system for impending pathologic fractures
  5. Treatment of desmoids tumors with or without radiation

Discussions have been undertaken previously regarding the AAOS Antibiotic Guidelines Committee and MSTS exception to their ruling.  Also the MSTS will plan to send one person to the AAOS Clinician Scientist Development Program in Oct. 2010.   There is already some planning for the next AAOS Molecular Biology and Therapeutics in Musculoskeletal Oncology (MBTMO) Research Program.

Fellowship Match for Musculoskeletal Oncology Program
MSTS along with AAHKS, HS, KS have created a match process through the SanFrancisco Match Program.  The match for orthopaedic oncology fellowship positions has been completed for year 2011. Match Day was May 1, 2010, for Fellows to begin training in July of 2011. Some problems related to the transition to a match selection process have been hopefully solved.  Dr. Bob Quinn and his committee have been extensively involved in this somewhat complex transition.   Please continue to encourage support and honor the match process.

2010 Dues Payment
Our Society relies upon membership dues for operational expenses and as a result of the relatively small size of the organization we are even more dependent.  Annual dues are $400 (members), $250 (candidate members, first two years only then same rate as members), $400 (Associate and Affiliate members), $0 (Emeritus). Barbara Rapp has sent an email to all members regarding online access. We encourage all candidate members who are qualified to become members to change their status.

Update Your Email and Contact Info
The MSTS administration needs to keep accurate records of your contact and email information.  Please review your information that was printed in the 2010 Specialty Day program book and make corrections by contacting Barbara Rapp (info@msts.org).  If you do not have a copy of the program book, Barbara can review your current contact information with you.

MSTS Website
The website has been revised.  Please visit the new site and offer suggestion for improvement. If you have suggestions, please forward them to Barbara Rapp (info@msts.org).  As we stated above, there will be a password protected section for members only to access in the near future and has been issued as a separate MSTS membership number.

Contribution to OREF
The MSTS funds within OREF are vitally important and used for research and education initiatives.  The account funding is low and relies upon OREF donations that are designated for MSTS.  Please consider a donation!

Education Committee Update
This committee is headed by Theodore Parsons, M.D. and a very important part of the MSTS mission. The committee will have two new members by the Philadelphia meeting in the fall.  New bylaws for the selection and participation on this committee have been suggested which include limitation of length of service.  Better criteria for the Specialty Day Meeting in terms of selection of chair and co-chair will be included in proposed changes. Any suggestions as to new ideas for education activities are welcomed by Dr. Parsons.
