RE:  Request for MSTS research proposals

Dear MSTS member:

The society’s leadership has set aside monies ($50K) designated specifically for the purpose of fostering MSTS directed research activities.  While the society has performed notable cooperative projects in the past, the entire MSTS membership is a unique resource whose potential has yet to be fully realized.  Please take some time to consider submitting a proposal.  The research committee has identified several priority areas for clinical investigation (attached) and a preference will be given to proposals addressing these disease areas, although other ideas are welcome.  Applicants may wish to investigate innovative means of leveraging research activities using infrastructure provided by www.orthopaedia.com or working with existing cooperative groups (e.g., COG, SARC).

To submit a proposal, a simple description of the idea (no longer than 1-2 pages) is required and should convey the background, specific hypothesis, objective, study design, rationale, any known preliminary data, criteria for inclusion/exclusion, treatment plan/protocol, feasibility and estimated cost.  A study template is attached.  Study ideas will be judged upon scientific merit, impact, feasibility, timeline, correlative science and cost.  Please submit applications to Richard Terek, MD, at:

richard_terek@brown.edu

The deadline for submission is July 31, 2010.
Applications will be reviewed by the research committee.  Suitable proposals will be recommended for funding to the executive committee who makes the final funding decision.  Announcement of funding would be made at the Annual meeting in Philadelphia.

Research and contribution to our field is a most important goal of the society.  Please seriously consider how you might join in this endeavor.

Sincerely yours,

Richard Terek, MD
Research Committee Chair
