Skeletal Metastasis Committee

The Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS) is a leader in advancing the care of patients with skeletal metastases. Through evidence-based guidelines, multidisciplinary collaboration, and targeted education, MSTS supports orthopaedic oncologists and their partners in delivering high-quality, patient-centered care.

Orthopaedic oncologists have unique training in the evaluation and surgical management of metastatic bone disease, and MSTS serves as the professional home and authoritative voice for this work within a multidisciplinary model of care.

What MSTS Delivers in Skeletal Metastases

Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs)

MSTS produces high-quality, evidence-based Clinical Practice Guidelines to support informed decision-making for physicians and patients. Guidelines are developed through rigorous systematic reviews and multidisciplinary collaboration.

Featured Guidelines

  • Management of Metastatic Humeral Disease (Approved April 2023)
    Read the Guideline
  • Treatment of Metastatic Carcinoma and Myeloma of the Femur (Approved June 2020)
Developed in collaboration with ASCO and ASTRO
    → Read the Guideline

Novel Clinical Practice Assessments (NCPA)

NCPAs provide evidence-based summaries of emerging technologies where the available literature is limited. These assessments inform practice without issuing formal recommendations.

Current NCPAs

  • Radiofrequency Ablation for Skeletal Metastases
  • Use of Radiolucent Implants in Musculoskeletal Oncology Surgery

Metastatic Bone Disease Task Force

Established in 2022, the MSTS Metastatic Bone Disease Task Force is a multidisciplinary initiative created to guide the Society’s strategic approach to metastatic bone disease and to strengthen MSTS’s role in this critically important area of musculoskeletal oncology.

The Task Force includes orthopaedic oncologists, spine surgeons, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, and interventional radiologists, and focuses on:

  • Education and training
  • Clinical practice and novel procedures
  • Disparities in care
  • Research and collaboration
  • Practice management and policy

The MSTS Skeletal Metastases Committee is responsible for implementing the Task Force’s recommendations.

MSTS develops educational initiatives and hands-on workshops focused on contemporary techniques in the management of skeletal metastases. These offerings are designed to support orthopaedic oncologists at all stages of practice.

Recent initiatives include hands-on workshops held in conjunction with the MSTS Annual Meeting.
